My story will not be unusual or different from many others I expect. I tried every organization, read every book and I was overweight and miserable. I could diet madly for a month and maybe loose 2kgs, then spend a weekend with friends and put on 4. It was like my body had given up on me and when my brain started to accept this larger me, I knew I was at a crossroads and something drastic had to be done.
I started researching lap band surgery and new this was for me.
The few weeks before surgery when you’re on the liquid diet, to me was a test. I found it hard to go from normal to nothing, it really tested my resolve. My advice now is, if you can’t survive these weeks, doing it properly, then don’t go through with it, you’re really not ready. Looking back we all nod and smile when they tell us this is a lifestyle change, we hear that all the time, but if you’re not ready to change everything about you, then you’re not ready.
After the surgery everything was much easier, the weight just falls off and you start to feel great, I didn’t miss the food but I did miss chewing.
Now I’m nearly to the weight I want to be, and I still find it hard to shift those last few kilograms. I’ll never order a main course again, eat a steak or a breadroll. It’s much easier to eat a whole packet of twisties than it is to have a sandwich, so it still comes down to choices, making the right decisions about what to put in my mouth, making a lifestyle change. Lap band surgery to me wasn’t a cure or a solution, it was a great help, but ultimately it’s up to yourself. |
